PARIS: (FN) Two persons have been reportedly charged for the killing of an 85-year old French-Jewish woman who after being stabbed, was then set ablaze in a crime now being considered as anti-Semitic, a source said on Tuesday.
It was report by local media that Mirreille Knoll, who escaped being killed in the Second World War was found to have died in her apartment in Eastern Paris on Friday by Firefighters called in to put out the fire.
But an autopsy revealed she had been stabbed severally before a fire was started in the apartment where she had lived.
The killing of the Octogenarian was described by neighbours as shocking and barbaric, coming exactly a year after an Orthodox Jewish woman who was in her sixties was thrown out of her window in Paris by a neighbor shouting “Allahu Akhbar”.
Investigators on Monday hath said they believed Knoll’s murder was related to her religion, adding that, they were “not excluding any hypothesis”. They also stated the suspected will be charged for aggravated robbery.
One of the suspects is said to be a neighbor in his mid-twenties and very well known to the deceased and had visited that day, Knoll’s son had told AFP.
In a statement, the police said the suspect had convictions for rape and sexual assaults. The police added that the second suspect has a long history of violent robbery.
In his reaction on twitter, French President, Emmanuel Macron condemned in strong terms the “dreadful’ killing while reiterating his commitment to fighting anti- Semitism.
In 1942, Knoll managed to escape the notorious round up of more than 13,000 Jews in Paris when she fled with her mother at age 10.
She later returned to the French Capital and got married to a survivor the Holocaust, who later died in the early 2000s.
On Monday, CRIF, an umbrella group of French Jewish Organisation, urged the authorities to carry full investigation of Knoll’s murder so as to bring perpetrators to justice as quickly as possible.
About a month ago, a judge confirmed that the murder of Sarah Halimi, the woman who was thrown out the window, was hatched by anti- Semitism.
It will also be recalled that four years ago, an Islamist gunman shot and killed three children and a teacher in a Jewish school in the south western city of Toulouse.
A colleague of the two brothers who massacred a group of cartoonist at Satirical Newspaper Charlie Hebdo murdered four people in a hostage-taking in a Jewish Mall in Paris.
